Peter Gaines, Chairman

YHA (The Youth Hostel Association) is a vibrant and ambitious charity providing young people, especially those of limited means, with an opportunity to explore our iconic countryside, towns and cities in a friendly, welcoming environment. We aim to deliver a healthy and educational guest experience with a view to positively impacting their lives, and are well on the way to our target of reaching out and enhancing the lives of 1 million young people.

With annual revenues approaching £50 million and a network of around 160 hostels, we at YHA are passionate about our cause and professional in delivering results, with a relentless focus on guest experience.

Our effectiveness and reach benefits from a wide range of partnerships (for example with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, National Citizens Service (NCS) and British Triathlon). We work in partnership with regional park authorities and a number of like-minded charities, and are supported by high profile parliamentarians and sporting ambassadors.

Above all, we cherish our staff and volunteers who are our heartbeat. Awarded with the Investors In People Gold award for the second time in 2016, we are committed to their welfare and their learning and development.

In recent years, YHA has modernised its governance model and practices. This has allowed us to become more relevant to young people today and more agile in responding to the need for future change. We have a skilled and experienced Board of Trustees committed to essential principles of youth representation, gender equality, race and ethnicity.

We now wish to recruit a dynamic, experienced Chief Executive to take over from Caroline White who has elected to step down after leading YHA through several years of growth and outstanding achievement.

The successful candidate will need to skilfully deliver a strategic business plan combining stability and continuity with an ambitious capital strategy put in place to deliver a further step change in the scale of YHA’s network and growth. The network has already benefitted from an investment of almost £40 million over the last five years. A priority will be to successfully deliver our London investment strategy and accelerate our ethical fundraising programme while establishing a clear long term YHA vision which will guide our development plans.

Inspired leadership and high quality interpersonal skills will be essential to motivate a diverse organisation while maintaining and further developing high level relationships with stakeholders and partners in public and private sectors.
